In Summer 2022

We worked with 18 Artists To Re-Imagine One of MHT’S Most Iconic Locations

Over the last 100 years Cat Alley has remained one of Manchester, NH most whimsical places. In the summer of 2022 Orbit Group started an initiative to work with 18 artists and bring new life to the alleyway. It’s great to see all the new foot traffic and smiles wandering through as they discover our great city.

Meet the Artists

What IS Cat Alley?

Originally known as “Deans Court” it’s said that one of Manchester’s early 1900’s Cotton Mill founder’s nick-named this narrow pathway “Cat Alley” after noticing it was a heavily trafficked area inhabited by mobs of rivaling street cats.

Over the century it has gone through many evolution’s. Many remember back in the 70’s when the Cat Alley Pub that hosed he cities longest bar while other bring up rumors the alleys more… “promiscuous” phases during the 1920’s.

In 2011,

The Anagnost Companies  (previous owner of the building), created a city-wide initiative transforming the alley into the colorful facade of feline themed murals with local artists.

This location has served our city since as a great destination spot for exploring travelers and locals alike. Over the past 10 years, existing artwork has started to chip, fade, and become victim to vandalism. So we decided in 2022 it was time for a face-lift.

A Gallery of the Original Murals

In honor of the original artworks from 2011 we made an effort to keep several of them and mark them as legacy pieces. Below is a gallery of our beautiful alleyway in its original creative state.

You May Have Noticed..

We have been having a little fun creating other cat-themed installments for the surrounding area on Elm St. We know putting cats everywhere downtown seems a little cooky but honestly, that’s why it’s so much fun. 😎

The Cat Bicycle Racks

We commissioned the talented Vivian Beer to develop these super fun cat bike racks.  You’ll find them along the walkways of Elm near Bookery Manchester. They are great for photo ops and to hold your bike as you pop into the bookstore!

Vivian specializes in contemporary design, craft, and sculpture. Her vision for abstracted metal and concrete was instrumental in forming these sleek cat shapes in the vibrant colors of orange, pink and black.

The Cat Walk

In an effort to add additional creative placemaking in the city David Hady designed a cat tessellation crosswalk.

It took several iterations, but with some productive back and forth with the Department of Public Works, we came up with a purrr-fect solution.  The white paint outlining the cat tesselation on top of the gray base wears over time which  allows for new designs in the future.

Orbit Group privately supports the maintenance of this project to ensure that the crosswalk will hold up under the feet of our cat-loving visitors for years to come!

The Cat Alley Arch

Mimicking the historical metal street arches seen around the city, this structure gives our Alley a landmark.

Jamie Nelson cut, shaped and painted this installment.

You may have also seen an LED light screen underneath the arch.t. We discovered the one we chose isn't the strongest choice in terms of standing up to the fierce New England weather. We are doing our research and looking to upgrade this installment in the near future. On it we plan to display fun cat themed animations that can act as another component bringing life into the Alley.

Welcome To

Cat Alley Animation

Here is one of the fun animations David Hady put together.  We want to feature it and others once the new LED screens are re-installed.
